Is it good to use mouthwash?

What is mouthwash?

Mouthwash is a solution that contributes to oral health by complementing brushing, helping to reduce oral discomfort, hydrate tissues, and alleviate bad breath.

Commonly referred to as mouth rinses, this term can be misleading because the density of a mouth rinse is typically higher than that of mouthwash, and rinses can be used both before and after brushing.

The benefits of using mouthwash

Since there are various types of mouthwashes, as we will explore later, the benefits to your mouth may slightly differ.

However, all types share the following dental hygiene benefits:

  • Temporarily refreshes the mouth by eliminating bacteria and reducing the effects of oral issues like bad breath.
  • Helps prevent the formation of plaque on the gums and between teeth, which could lead to tartar formation.
  • Depending on their composition, they may help combat cavities, especially those containing fluoride.
  • Proper use aids in preventing gingivitis.
  • Improves the feeling of cleanliness after brushing.

In summary, they function to help remove harmful bacteria from the mouth, allowing beneficial bacteria to thrive, thereby keeping our teeth and gums healthier.

Types of mouthwash

You may recognize various brands of mouthwash, like Listerine or Colgate. However, did you know that they offer different types, each designed for specific purposes?

Let’s examine each type:

  • Anti-cavity: Mainly contains fluoride, helping to prevent the demineralization of tooth enamel, thus preventing cavities.
  • Anti-gingivitis: Contains antiseptics that target the bacteria responsible for gingivitis.
  • Children’s: Contains less fluoride and typically comes in various flavors to make it more appealing to kids.
  • Sensitivity relief: The components help block the tubules, reducing dental sensitivity.
  • Bad breath: Includes various compounds to combat bacteria responsible for bad breath.
  • Dry mouth: Aimed at individuals suffering from xerostomia, often containing aloe vera to help alleviate dry mouth symptoms.

How to use mouthwash

Using mouthwashes like Listerine is beneficial for your oral health, as long as it is done in moderation and according to specialists’ instructions.

First, you should brush your teeth. If you skip brushing, mouthwash will have little effect. The liquid’s agents cannot operate effectively if a layer of bacteria is present, which toothbrushes help remove.

It’s also important to use a toothpaste that does not interfere with the active ingredients in the mouthwash.

To use mouthwash, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water to eliminate any toothpaste residue.
  2. Fill the cap of the bottle (or use a medicine cup). The recommended amount is typically 10-15 ml.
  3. Swish the liquid in your mouth.
  4. Swish for 30 to 60 seconds (time may vary depending on the type of mouthwash).
  5. Spit out the liquid into the sink.

After using mouthwash, avoid eating or drinking anything for at least two hours for it to be effective.
